State Fire Commander Simon Pilkington said the strikes were recorded up until 12:30pm Wednesday as the storm system moved across the state.

“Over 60 vegetation fires were reported, predominantly in the Midlands and South West districts,” he said.

Aircraft are currently conducting reconnaissance flights over remote areas to detect smoke plumes, with several already identified.

Of the reported fires, 10 remain active, 14 are under patrol and 38 have been successfully extinguished.

“There are currently no warnings in place for any of the new fire starts, but Tasmanians are asked to remain alert,” Pilkington said.

“If you are aware of lightning strikes in the local area and you see smoke or fire, please call Triple Zero (000).”
