A potentially suspicious rubbish fire has broken out at the Brighton Waste Transfer Station in Hobart’s northern suburbs this morning.
The blaze comes as a frustrating blow to residents, disrupting the long weekend clean-up plans of some.
The Brighton Council says the station will be closed today due to what they described as “vandalism”.
“Thank you for your patience and understanding while staff clean up and make safe the site,” the council said.
“The [facility] will re-open as normal on Friday.”
The Tasmania Fire Service has issued a smoke alert for residents in the area, warning them to avoid the smoke.
“There is expected to be smoke from this fire visible around Walker Crescent, Bridgewater through to Gagebrook,” a warning reads.
“The fire has been contained and will smoulder until machinery can pull the pile of rubbish apart.”
