The sight of snow blanketing kunanyi/Mt Wellington and other peaks across Tasmania on Sunday morning drew plenty of locals and tourists out of bed early.

Traffic on the mountain was restricted to Bracken Lane around 6pm on Saturday night and remained shut until midday Sunday, when it reopened to The Springs

Those wanting to see snow were left with no choice but to park and walk up the mountain, with the City of Hobart warning of “heavy congestion” at its base around 10am.

Earlier this month, the council cautioned that allowing all vehicles up in icy and snowy conditions could prove deadly.

Snow and ice affected many roads across the state, prompting Tasmania Police to warn drivers to exercise caution, particularly on the Highland Lakes Road and Lyell Highway.

Despite the road closures and chilly conditions, the snowfall was good news for snow enthusiasts, skiers and tobogganers.
