Tasmania’s new AFL team will be called the Tasmania Devils.
The Tasmania Football Club officially revealed their colours, logo and foundation guernsey, which all pay homage to decades of tradition in Tasmanian football, at dozens of launch events across the state on Monday.
The team will wear Myrtle Green, Primrose Yellow and Rose Red, with their guernsey featuring a map of Tasmania and a red “T” at its centre.
“It really is a no-brainer as far as I’m concerned … We first wore these colours back in 1908,” Tasmanian football legend Matthew Richardson said as he unveiled the colours.
“To be representing 150 years of history, that’s how long we’ve been playing this great game down here, so I think we’re overdue for this after 150 years,” he said.
The long-awaited entry of the Tasmania Devils into the AFL is set for 2028.
Tasmania Football Club Chair Grant O’Brien said the club may have only launched tonight, but the state’s football heritage already dates back over 150 years.
“Footy is part of the fabric of what it means to be Tasmanian. Our colours are a demonstration of our amazing football lineage but also signal our bold new era,” he said.
“In 1908, our colours were agreed and I can tell you our traditional colours will endure.”
“It is important that our name represents who we are and where we are heading. Tasmanians are unique. We are humble, we show grit and determination, and we can often be a bit cheeky.”
