Tasmanians were treated to a spectacular light show early on Friday morning as the Aurora Australis lit up the skies across the state.

The cosmic display, also known as the southern lights, was sparked by a solar storm that sent energy from the sun hurtling towards Earth and into its magnetic field.

The aurora was visible between 4am and 6am, with Pulse followers sharing their pictures from across the state.

“Woke up at 5:30am [on Facebook] it was happening, flew out of bed and could see it to the eye! Wow just wow,” Alycia Huxley in Bagdad said.

Photographer Thurein Kyaw said he was “rewarded” for dragging himself out of bed in the early hours.

“The beams and colours were so vibrant and easily visible to the naked eye,” he said.

“It was so intense that even when the first light of dawn was starting to peek through, the beams were still so easily visible…mindblowing.”

Jason Ng at the Cape Bruny Lighthouse said the island’s lighthouse was an “amazing place” to witness the aurora.

“Colours were visible and you could see it moving constantly,” he said.

“An amazing light show to be remembered for years to come.”
