Tasmania Fire Service has welcomed 24 new career firefighters into its ranks after they successfully completed 15 weeks of intensive training.
The new recruits will now move into brigades to continue their basic training for the next four years before becoming fully qualified.
Deputy Chief Officer Matt Lowe said the firefighters have been trained using world-class firefighting and rescue techniques, which will allow them to respond to various incidents.
“I’m pleased that we can now inject 24 new firefighters into the TFS ranks, who are all ready to respond to all types of incidents and work with their new colleagues to protect the Tasmanian community,” he said.
“They have been trained using the world’s best practice firefighting and rescue techniques that will allow them to respond to structure fires, bushfires, road crashes, hazmat incidents and deliver first aid to patients.”
16 of the new recruits will be stationed in Hobart and eight will call Launceston home.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management Felix Ellis congratulated the “everyday heroes” joining the service.
“You’ll be providing an essential service to Tasmanians in their greatest time of need, running towards the danger to save lives,” Ellis said.
“It is these extraordinary acts of bravery that our community should always be mindful of, honour and celebrate.”
