The roofed venue will seat 23,000 spectators and serve as the state’s premier facility for sport, entertainment, arts and events.

Macquarie Point Urban Renewal Minister Eric Abetz described the procurement launch as a long-awaited milestone.

“… This signifies to the business community, to hoteliers, to builders, to tourism operators and more that now is the time to get ready,” he said.

The government expects to shortlist two contractors from the EOI process, with applications closing on February 11.

Those selected will then compete through a two-stage tender process throughout 2026, with contract award targeted for January 2027.

Respondents must demonstrate experience delivering large-scale, complex infrastructure projects safely, on time and within budget.

Local participation features prominently in the assessment criteria, accounting for 30% of the evaluation weighting.

“For any work, Tasmanian social and economic factors will be considered with our local benefits test,” Abetz said.

“This is vital. This project will be distinctly Tasmanian and the cultural beating heart of our state.”

“It is integral that Tasmanians are at the heart of building it.”

Contractors must commit to using local workers, sourcing goods from Tasmanian small businesses and ensuring apprentices complete at least 20% of total labour hours.

The stadium design is already 70% complete following work by Cox Architecture and engineering consultants.

State parliament approved the project in December after months of public debate over costs and location.

Construction is expected to begin next year, with the stadium forming a key component of broader urban renewal plans for the former industrial site.
