Bookings for Tasmania’s iconic Overland Track walking season will open tomorrow, with prospective walkers urged to be ready early to secure a spot.

The Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service announced that bookings for the 2026/27 season will go live on Tuesday, with a virtual waiting room opening at 8am.

From 9am, those in the waiting room will be randomly placed in a queue to access the booking site.

The department strongly recommended joining the waiting room before 9am, as latecomers will be sent to the back of the queue.

With only 34 places available each day, popular dates can sell out quickly.

Last year, more than 3,000 walkers made confirmed bookings within just six hours of the system opening, with the high demand causing significant delays in the queue.

The department advised walkers to have all group members’ full names, dates of birth, states and nationalities ready before entering the queue.

The Overland Track attracts around 11,000 local, interstate and international walkers each year and passes through some of Tasmania’s most striking alpine landscapes.

The track is open year-round but carries a booking fee of $312 per adult during the peak season, which runs from October 1 to May 31.

Outside peak season, walkers are asked to register their walk through the Parks and Wildlife Service online system.

All walkers receive a safety briefing from Parks and Wildlife staff at check-in before setting out.

A link to the booking site will be shared on the service’s Facebook page on Tuesday morning.
