Parents and locals in southern Tasmania are being urged to remain vigilant following reports of a man approaching children near schools in recent days.

Detective Inspector Craig Joel said that while the unknown man has not harmed or assaulted any children, he has reportedly spoken to several and offered them lollies.

“The man drives a white van and is believed to be of caucasian appearance,” Joel said.

“He has reportedly spoken to children near school grounds, after school hours.”

Police are encouraging anyone to report any unusual vehicles parked near schools or other places where children gather.

Police have released an image of a white van, which they say may not be the exact make or model as descriptions from young witnesses vary

“While the intentions of the man are unclear at this stage, it is important that we are all vigilant,” Joel said.

“We acknowledge these reports can cause concern in the community and we want to reassure people that detectives are investigating the matter.”

He said police patrols around school areas have been increased.

“If you see something suspicious, note down the person’s description and the vehicle’s registration if possible,” he said.

Information can be provided to Tasmania Police on 131 444, Crime Stoppers Tasmania or Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.
