A Tasmanian firefighter allegedly found in possession of child exploitation material by police is facing criminal charges.

The 41-year-old from the state’s south has been stood down following a “joint investigation” led by the Tasmania Police and Australian Federal Police Anti Child Exploitation team.

“The man has been charged with possessing or controlling child abuse material obtained using a carriage service, contrary to s. 474.22A of the Commonwealth Criminal Code 1995,” police said.

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Jeremy Smith said the man will not return to work as the court process plays out.

“This is distressing news and wellbeing services are being made available to TFS staff and volunteers as required,” he said.

“It is not appropriate for us to comment further as the matter is before the courts.”

The man will reappear in the Hobart Magistrates Court in August.

Police have charged several people with similar offences in recent months.
