Police have caught 38 drivers speeding in a weekend crackdown across northern Tasmania that also netted a drunk driver more than twice the legal limit.

The operation targeted highways and country roads, with officers determined to stop motorists who think they can dodge detection on remote routes.

One driver was clocked at 122km/h in an 80 zone on Illawarra Road at Longford, while another hit 144km/h in a 110 zone on the Midland Highway at Powranna.

Inspector Nick Clark said patrols covered the Bass, Midland, Tasman, East Tamar, West Tamar and Esk highways, along with rural roads including Lake Leake and Bridport.

Of the 60 random breath tests carried out, a 21-year-old Ravenswood man returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.103.

Two more drivers tested positive for drugs and one was caught behind the wheel while disqualified.

Clark said the results showed police were serious about road safety everywhere.

“If motorists think they can avoid police attention by taking a regional road or a quiet country road, well they should think again,” he said.

“If you are engaging in dangerous or reckless driving behaviour, police could be just around the next corner and you will be caught.”

He said speed remained a driving factor in crashes, with every kilometre over the limit increasing risks for all road users.

“It was disappointing to see a number of speeding drivers,” he said.

“And when it comes to driving on Tasmania’s rural roads, our message is that police can be anywhere at any time.”
