Tasmania set for snow as fire service issues high fire danger warning

Snow is forecast to fall to 900 metres in parts of Tasmania tomorrow as a cold front sweeps across the state, with authorities warning fire danger will remain high despite the wet weather.

The Tasmania Fire Service has issued a high fire danger rating for most of the state on Sunday.

“Make sure any fires lit in recent days or weeks, including fire pits and other outdoor fires, are fully extinguished,” the service said.

“Soak it. Stir it. Soak it again.”

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and possible small hail across the south and west of the state.

Fresh southwesterly winds of up to 50km/h are expected across parts of the state.

Hobart is forecast to reach just 16 degrees with a high chance of showers, while Launceston will see a top of 20 degrees with windy conditions.

Marine wind warnings are in place for both St Helens and Burnie.

Despite the unsettled conditions, the fire service is urging Tasmanians not to become complacent.

“If you do see any signs of fire re-igniting such as smoke and flames, call Triple-Zero (000),” the service said.

Fire permits remain in place statewide.

Conditions are expected to improve from Monday, with the bureau forecasting sunny skies and temperatures climbing into the mid-20s.

However, fire danger ratings will remain elevated, with UV levels forecast to reach “very high” throughout the week.

Another cold front is expected late Wednesday, bringing showers back to the west.
