A partnership between Tasmania’s major sporting clubs and the University of Tasmania is fast-tracking young people into sports administration careers through an accelerated degree program.
The Blundstone Tasmania Academy of Leadership and Sport (TALS) has announced a deal that gives graduates 1.5 years credit towards a Bachelor of Business degree, cutting study time to just 2.5 years.
TALS, established last year and led by Tasmania Football Club alongside the JackJumpers, Hobart Hurricanes and Netball Tasmania, already has 11 students from its first intake progressing into the UTAS pathway.
The program runs through TasTAFE and now has over 85 students across Launceston and Hobart campuses pursuing off-field sports careers.

“This first-of-its-kind collaboration benefits Tasmanian students,” Tasmania Football Club’s Head of Education and Impact Jesse O’Hara said.
“We are thrilled to be able to take the next step with the TALS program and provide the tertiary education opportunity to our graduates in partnership with UTAS.”

The partnership includes real industry placements integrated with university studies, creating what organisers call Australia’s first complete education-to-employment pathway in sports administration.
O’Hara said the collaboration keeps young talent in Tasmania while attracting new students to the state.
“We know the power of combining sport and education and the opportunities that can create for our students,” he said.
“This is evidenced already and we expect this to continue to increase in impact as the Tasmanian sports industry continues to grow.”

University of Tasmania Deputy Vice-Chancellor Kate Huntington said the partnership demonstrates innovative ways to boost educational participation across the state.
“As a result of the TALS partnership, we have students in Business, Education and Sport and Exercise Science courses at our campuses across the state,” Huntington said.
