The Tasmanian apple harvest has begun earlier than usual this year, with growers reporting exceptional quality fruit following ideal summer conditions.
Harvest operations are now in full swing across the Apple Isle, with Royal Gala and Smitten varieties among the first to be picked.
Numerous others, including Golden Delicious, Pink Lady, Granny Smith and Jazz, will continue to be harvested until May.
CEO of Fruit Growers Tasmania Peter Cornish said the state’s apple-growing heritage spans generations.

“Tasmanians have been growing apples in commercial quantities for 170 years,” Cornish said.
“This endeavour and commitment has been handed down within families across the generations, with some families still growing apples six generations on.”

The warm, sunny summer has enhanced the sweetness, size and colour of this year’s crop, Cornish said, with the state’s unique growing conditions allowing fruit to develop slowly on the tree.
“We are lucky enough to have dedicated and resilient growers here that are continuing to adapt and innovate to ensure the apple industry in Tasmania continues to advance,” he added.
Tasmania boasts several exclusive apple varieties, including Rubigold and Tiger Fuji, which are unique to the state. The island is also home to R&R Smith, one of Australia’s largest organic apple producers.
With 8% of all apples sold in Australia now grown organically and demand increasing by approximately 20% annually, Tasmania’s apple industry is well-positioned to capitalise on changing consumer preferences.

“Tasmania remains free from many plant-related pests and diseases meaning our produce can be exported with minimal, if any, phytosanitary treatment giving us a distinct advantage in some markets,” Cornish said.
This season’s apples are available at roadside stalls, farmers markets, independent retailers and major supermarkets throughout Australia.
