Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, who was born in Hobart, is set to become the world’s first Australian-born queen.
It comes after Queen Margrethe II of Denmark made the shock announcement that that she would abdicate during her New Year’s Eve address.
Queen Margrethe cited her age and health issues as reasons for her abdication, which will take place on January 14.
She has been the longest-serving monarch in Danish history, taking over from her father in 1972.

Crown Prince Frederik, who married Crown Princess Mary in 2004, will succeed his mother as the new monarch.
Mary and her 12-year-old twins were recently seen boarding a flight to Tasmania from Sydney Airport, visiting family in Hobart for Christmas.
Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff said our state ‘couldn’t be prouder’ of Crown Princess Mary.
“Princess Mary is a wonderful ambassador for Tasmania,” Premier Jeremy Rockliff wrote.
“With her demonstrated humility, grace and kindness I am sure Crown Princess Mary will be embraced as Queen alongside her husband, King Frederik once Proclaimed later this month.”
Crown Princess Mary’s patronages range across areas of culture, fashion, humanitarian aid, support for research and science, social programs, education, health and sport.
This includes organisations right here in Tasmania, where she is an International Patron of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation.
