A Hobart pair who faced constant demand for their handmade leather belts at last year’s Tasmanian Craft Fair are returning with an expanded range and high hopes for another sell-out weekend.

Hope & Jane Leather co-founders Kirby Jane and Steph Hope will set up their tools in Deloraine next weekend as part of the annual celebration of handmade art and craftsmanship.

“We didn’t stop making belts all weekend last year,” Kirby said.

The duo will once again craft custom belts on-site, but this time with more leather and buckle options for customers to choose from.

“We’re going to be making belts on site again, with all our gear and tools,” Kirby said.

“This year we’ve expanded our range of leather and buckles, so people can choose their own adventure when it comes to their belt.”

The business will also debut a new collection made from repurposed saddles that would otherwise go to waste.

“We get the saddles, pull them apart and start by making bigger things like bags and notebook covers, then work our way down to wallets and key rings so nothing goes to waste,” Kirby said.

“It’s really cool to tell a story through each piece. It’s sustainable, but it’s also deeply personal.”

Kirby discovered leatherwork after a career in emergency services, teaching herself the craft as a way to unwind.

“What started out as a mindfulness exercise after a busy shift taking 000 calls quickly turned into a love of working with my hands,” she said.

Steph, who joined the business in 2021, said she was drawn in by the creative process.

“What drew me to leatherwork was the craft itself,” she said.

“As a writer, you hone your craft over time, challenge yourself, and put yourself out there. Leatherwork is just the same.”

More than 250 artisans will feature at this year’s fair, which runs from October 31 to November 2.
