The Tasmanian football community is in mourning following the sudden death of 16-year-old Emily French.
The Wynyard Football Club confirmed the news on Monday, describing French as a standout talent who had made her senior women’s debut just last year.
“It is with great sadness the Wynyard Football Club acknowledges the sudden passing of Emily French,” the club said in a statement.
French began her football journey with the Wynyard Cats in the Under-14 Girls team before progressing through the club’s youth pathway.
She made her senior women’s debut in Round 6 of the 2025 season, aged just 16.
Her talent saw her represent Tasmania at the Under-16 National Championships, as well as take part in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Program.
The club said French would be remembered for more than her ability on the field.
“Beyond the field, Emily’s genuine kindness, infectious brightness and loving personality made her the wonderful teammate and friend we were privileged to know and will forever remember,” the statement said.
“This unexpected passing has deeply shocked the club and wider community.”
AFL Tasmania also paid tribute to the young footballer.
“AFL Tasmania extends its deepest sympathies to the Wynyard Football Club, North West Football League and Tasmania Devils communities following the passing of Emily French,” the organisation said.
“Emily was a beloved member of the Wynyard Cats and the Tasmania Devils program, as well as the National Multicultural Academy.”
The Wynyard Football Club urged the community to support one another during the difficult time.
“We encourage you to lean on one another, show compassion and support those closest to you,” the club said.
The club also extended its condolences to French’s family and friends.
