Tasmanian football players Brooke Barwick and Georgia Clark have experienced their “dream come true” moment tonight after both were selected as the states newest AFLW draftees.
The Tasmania Devils pair, who have been teammates since their junior days at the Glenorchy Football Club, had been widely expected to be chosen in this year’s draft.
Barwick was selected by the Bulldogs at number four, while Clark was picked by Collingwood at number nine.
The past few years have been highly successful for both players, as they have not only received AFLW National Academy selections but also represented the Allies at the National Championships.
Kingborough and Tasmania Devils midfielder Mackenzie Ford was also selected at pick 43 by Richmond on Monday night.
Last week, Clark described the lead up the the draft as a “surreal experience” and said she has been through a “mix of emotions”.
“It’s very exciting. All the hard work that’s gone in has led to this moment and it would be a dream come true to be drafted,” she said.
“It would be very special. Since I’ve played footy it’s been a big goal of mine and getting to any club would be pretty awesome.”
Meanwhile, Barwick has spent the past nine months on the sidelines due to an ACL injury.
“It was definitely hard from the sidelines watching teammates running out,” she said.
“But for me, it’s been about switching the mindset to be positive and look at the things I can learn outside the game, and hopefully that is beneficial for me when I go back to play.”
“The thought of moving away is definitely scary, but I think with the support of family and friends I’ll do well”
“It’s been such a dream of mine, so to know that I could be picked up and moving away is a real privilege.”
