Tasmanian nurses will officially receive a pay raise before Christmas after the State Government’s latest offer was approved by a majority of union members.

The new deal is expected to make it easier to recruit and retain skilled staff in the public sector.

ANMF Tasmanian Branch Secretary Emily Shepherd says the package puts the state in “good stead” when it comes to “competing with other states and territories”.

“The wages offer, which is the best we’ve had in over a decade for nurses and midwives, will see nurses and midwives in Tasmania paid in line with a national average or above,” Shepherd told WIN.

For those currently employed, the raise means a ‘signifiant increase’ over the next three years.

“Across the board for all enrolled nurses, registered nurses and registered midwives, they will receive, over the life of the agreement, between 14% and 15% in terms of wage rises.”

Tasmania’s Treasurer Michael Ferguson has welcomed the agreement, calling it a “fair and affordable outcome for all concerned”.

More than 80% of union members from the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation voted for the deal.
