Tasmanian football fans are celebrating ‘one of the greatest’ AFL drafts after three players were selected in the top 20 tonight.

18-year-old Launceston player Colby McKercher was drafted as the second overall pick by North Melbourne in the AFL draft, marking the highest-ever draft position for a Tasmanian Devils player.

“I didn’t really have an idea, I kind of had an inkling it might be North Melbourne,” McKercher said.

“I’m super excited, they have a super exciting list and obviously Clarko (coach Alastair Clarkson) coming along. The future’s bright and I’m keen to be a part of it.”

McKercher’s grandfather was emotional as he watched his 18-year-old grandson’s dream come true.

“Pop has been a big figure in my life and probably got me started on football. I just love hanging out with him,” McKercher said.

Ryley Sanders made history for Launceston and Tasmanian football by being selected at pick six by the Western Bulldogs.

“I had a good inkling I could end up at the Doggies. They’ve got so many great players I can learn off,” Sanders said.
