A young Tasmanian man allegedly got behind the wheel twice while intoxicated in a single night, the second time just hours after having his licence disqualified.

The 19-year-old was first pulled over in Hobart’s Sandy Bay about 1:45am on Thursday.

He allegedly returned a breath alcohol reading of 0.122 – more than double the legal limit.

Police charged him with drink driving and disqualified his licence for 12 months.

But just over two hours later, about 4am, officers intercepted the same young man in Sandy Bay again. He allegedly blew 0.095.

Police charged him with a second drink driving offence, as well as driving while disqualified and breaching bail.

He was refused bail and is expected to face the Hobart Magistrates Court today.

Acting Sergeant Tom Andrews said the alleged repeat offending in such a short window was alarming.

“This is a clear example of someone making repeated and dangerous choices,” he said.

“To be caught drink driving twice in three hours and while already disqualified shows a complete disregard for the safety of others.”

Andrews urged motorists not to get behind the wheel after drinking or taking drugs.

“Our message is simple. If you drink or use drugs, don’t drive,” he said.
