Walkers are being reminded to take extreme caution while trekking Tasmania’s tracks and trails after a teenager suffered a terrifying fall over the Easter long weekend.

17-year-old Launceston teenager Thomas slipped and plummeted close to 100 metres down a cliff at Liffey Falls in the Meander Valley on Monday.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was sent to the remote incident, with an intensive care paramedic and retrieval doctor winched to the scene to provide immediate care.

A seriously injured Thomas was then carefully extricated from the site by stretcher and airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Speaking to Pulse, his family said his injuries include multiple broken ribs, a punctured lung, brain haemorrhage, neck fracture and two broken vertebrae in his lower spine.

“He has recovered well and is still able to walk,” his sister said.

“He’s awake and stable [but] in a lot of pain … We’re just hoping for a speedy recovery.”

In August, an injured woman was rescued from the same track after falling down a bank.
