Damaging winds are set to batter most of Tasmania from early Sunday morning, with gusts reaching up to 110 km/h in elevated areas.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning covering much of the state, including Hobart, as a vigorous cold front system approaches.
“Damaging northwesterly winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 110 km/h are likely to develop from early Sunday morning [across elevated terrain]”, the bureau said.
Lower-lying areas, including Hobart, can expect wind gusts around 100 km/h throughout Sunday.

The warning covers the Western, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, East Coast, Central Plateau and Midlands districts, as well as parts of the North East, North West Coast and Central North regions.
Population centres including Hobart, St Helens, Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk and Oatlands are all in the firing line.

The destructive conditions are being driven by a vigorous northwesterly flow developing ahead of a cold front.
Winds will turn westerly and begin easing from the west through Sunday evening, but the reprieve will be short-lived.
“A second cold front brings damaging winds from around sunrise Monday,” the bureau warned.
People are being urged to secure outdoor furniture, trampolines and bins ahead of the severe weather.

Those with loose items around their properties should tie them down or bring them inside.
