Thousands of Tasmanians have pulled on their shorts today for the fifth annual Shorts Day, a statewide event shining a light on the importance of mental health conversations.

Organised by SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY, the initiative encourages people to “brave the cold and brave the conversation”, prompting reflection on why mental health matters personally to each participant.

Founder Mitch McPherson said Shorts Day has grown into one of the organisation’s most powerful awareness campaigns.

“It’s always a little funny to see people wearing shorts in the middle of the Tassie winter, but it sends a serious message that mental health matters,” he said.

“It’s a statement and when people get asked why they’re doing it, powerful conversations occur. Shorts Day reminds us all to check in, to speak up and to support those around us.”

RACT is once again backing the event, with Chief Experience Officer Karla Wasinski saying mental health support is a key part of their mission.

“We are committed to supporting our fellow Tasmanians when they are at their lowest point,” she said.

“Promoting open discussions about mental health and supporting the wellbeing of Tasmanians clearly aligns with our purpose.”

Shorts Day this year has also partnered with Bonorong Wildlife sanctuary, who say the campaign aligns “so strongly” with their values.

“We care deeply about the small changes that make a big difference. Whether it’s helping an injured animal, protecting our environment, or showing up for someone who’s struggling – Shorts Day reflects what Bonorong stands for,” Greg Irons from Bonorong said.

Last year’s event saw strong participation from schools, workplaces, sports clubs and community groups, with organisers thanking everyone who again joined in.

Funds raised from Shorts Day go towards mental health and suicide prevention programs right across Tasmania.
