Tasmanians are being encouraged to turn their empty drink containers into charitable donations this summer as part of a statewide recycling initiative.
Recycle Rewards has called on holiday revellers to “donate your empties” to more than 600 registered donation partners across Tasmania, converting recyclables into vital funding for community organisations.
Since the scheme began on May 1, Tasmanians have donated more than $160,000 through container returns at Recycle Rewards refund points.
TasRecycle CEO Ken Roughley said the warmer months presented an ideal opportunity to make an environmental and social impact.

“Every container counts. By donating your empties, you’re helping the environment strengthening your community. It’s a simple action that has a real impact,” Roughley said.
RSPCA Tasmania has been named as the initiative’s major donation partner this year, with funds supporting animal rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming efforts during the busy summer period.

RSPCA Tasmania CEO Andrea Dawkins said the partnership is significant.
“We rely heavily on community support and Recycle Rewards gives Tasmanians a simple, everyday way to help animals who desperately need care,” Dawkins said.
“Donating your empties truly helps save lives.”
The network offers multiple ways to donate, including reverse vending machines, depots and over-the-counter locations throughout the state.

Corey Wingard, General Manager Tasmania for network operator TOMRA Cleanaway, said the scheme has a dual benefit.
“Many of our locations across Tasmania are hosted by not-for-profit and charity organisations” Wingard said.
“Just by participating in Recycle Rewards, Tassie communities are making a difference in so many ways.”
Residents can donate to their preferred cause by selecting charity partners on-screen at vending machines, scanning donation partner barcodes, or updating payout methods in the Recycle Rewards app.
