A new statewide walking challenge aims to promote fitness while supporting Tasmania’s migrant and refugee communities this October.
The Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania has launched The Big Tassie Walk, inviting individuals, families, workplaces and community groups to participate in a month-long walking and fundraising initiative.
The challenge builds on former premier Peter Gutwein’s previous charity walks, which saw him cover more than 660 kilometres across two separate journeys earlier this year.
“This is about getting a little fitter whilst standing up for the kind of Tasmania we want to be,” said Gutwein, who serves as MRC Tas Chair.

“Inclusive, welcoming and proud of the incredible contributions of our multicultural communities.”
Participants can choose distances ranging from 45 km to 335 km, or set their own goal to complete during October.

All funds raised will support MRC Tas programs in mental health, employment, youth engagement and community building for migrants and refugees.
MRC Tas CEO Dr Gillian Long said the initiative would have meaningful impact.
“Every step taken and every dollar raised will help build a Tasmania where everyone feels safe, supported, and has the opportunity to thrive,” Long said.
The campaign has already secured backing from local councils, sporting clubs, businesses and community organisations.

Acting Mayor Russell Yaxley said Glenorchy City Council was registering a team for the event.
“Glenorchy City Council is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive and respectful community where everyone feels welcome,” Yaxley said.
Brighton Council CEO James Dryburgh also expressed support for the initiative.
“Tasmania thrives when every member of our community feels welcome, supported and empowered. There is strength in diversity and power in unity,” Dryburgh said.
Participation is free, with a digital platform allowing walkers to set goals, track progress and collect donations.
