The Agrarian Kitchen Restaurant in New Norfolk has made history by becoming the first Tasmanian establishment to be crowned ‘Restaurant of the Year’ at the Gourmet Traveller Annual Restaurant Awards.
Chef-owner Rodney Dunn, his wife and business partner Séverine Demanet and head chef Stephen Peak accepted the award at a gala event in Sydney on Monday.
“The Agrarian Kitchen has followed a remarkable trajectory, from a small farm and cooking school in the Derwent Valley to what is now a global dining destination,” Gourmet Traveller editor Joanna Hunkin said.
“The work Rodney and Séverine have put into transforming the property and its gardens and establishing a truly sustainable food system is extraordinary.”
“Tonight’s honour recognises that thoughtfulness and commitment and is testament to the fact that good things take time.”
The Agrarian Kitchen sources most of its ingredients from its own extensive gardens, orchard and farm, with the rest coming from local suppliers within a 100km radius.
The restaurant offers a set menu that changes daily based on what is seasonally available and freshly picked.
Dunn and Demanet have been at the helm of The Agrarian Kitchen since 2010, when they purchased the property with the intention of creating a sustainable farm and cooking school.
Over the years, they have expanded the operation to include a restaurant, bakery, providore and accommodation.
