Tasmania’s new Liberal ministry has been announced, with newly elected House of Assembly MPs Eric Abetz and Jane Howlett both picking up significant portfolios.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the pair will both bring extensive ministerial experience to the table when parliament resumes in May.

“Eric will assume the roles of Minister for Business, Industry and Resources and Minister for Transport,” Rockliff said.

“The new portfolio of Business, Industry and Resources carries significant responsibilities that are at the centre of economic growth and job creation, both of which are pivotal parts in delivering our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.”

“The portfolio will include the important responsibility of fisheries, including our vital salmon industry which the Liberal Government will continue to back 100%.”

Jane Howlett will serve as the Minister for Primary Industries and Water, as well as the Minister for Racing, a portfolio she previously held.

Several other responsibilities have been streamlined, leading to the removal of portfolios like Science and Technology, Advanced Manufacturing and Defence Industries, as well as the deletion of climate change, Antarctica and stadia from job titles.

Deputy Premier Michael Ferguson will stay on as Treasurer, Guy Barnett as Attorney-General and Minister for Health and Felix Ellis as Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management.

“Our Government will deliver on our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future and this new Ministry reflects a strong and experienced team whose mission will be to deliver the agenda that we took to the Tasmanian people,” Rockliff said.
