You could soon be able to legally drop your jocks and swim at one beach in Tasmania’s north, with the local council officially designating it as the state’s newest nude beach.
West Tamar Councillors approved the transformation of the secluded First Little Beach at Boobyalla Bay, located within Narawntapu National Park, into a ‘clothing-optional’ beach during a council meeting on Tuesday night.
The decision, which still requires final approval from Parks and Wildlife, was prompted by a request from a female member of the naturist community.
The newly designated nude zone is 1km from an unofficially labelled ‘Nudists Beach’, which appears on Google Maps.
“Council received correspondence from the Tasmania Parks & Wildlife Service (PWS) advising that they had received a request from a member of the community for a clothing optional beach within the Narawntapu National Park,” the council agenda read.
“Such a request can only be approved by PWS if the relevant council has a by-law or resolution allowing the same within the municipality.”
Under the public decency section of the Police Offences Act 1945, a person must not swim in any river, lake, harbour or stream in any public place or within sight of any person unless they are “decently clothed” or in a permitted area.
The council moved that the Chief Executive Officer works with Parks and Wildlife to arrange the erection of “appropriate signage … advising the public that this is a clothing optional beach”.
