A sudden hail storm has impacted areas of Tasmania’s north-west coast, including Burnie, this evening.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) had earlier forecasted a “very high chance of showers” and the possibility of thunderstorms across the north.
Locals have described the intensity of the hail, with residents witnessing hail and challenging driving conditions.
“I was in it [while] driving. A few cars [were] sliding all over the place,” one person wrote online.

The weather system is currently progressing across Tasmania’s north, leading to multiple power outages in various areas.
Lightning strikes have affected almost 400 properties in the Cradle Mountain, Mersey Forest, Sheffield and Wilmot areas, with TasNetworks reporting an ongoing effort to restore power.

Close to 600 customers are also without power across the Spreyton and Barrington areas.
A specific restoration time for both outages is currently unavailable.
The low-pressure system responsible for the storm is expected to continue moving across the state, potentially causing thunderstorms in the north-west, central and western regions.
