Tasmania’s thriving whisky industry has capped off another exceptional year, with local distilleries attracting visitors from across Australia and earning international recognition.
Tasmanian Whisky and Spirits Association President Kristy Lark said the sector has gone from strength to strength over the past 12 months.
“The association has seen great growth in visitor numbers across the state,” Lark said.
“Tasmanian whisky has won multiple World Whisky Awards and we have showcased our spirits in Belfast and Hong Kong.”

Lark said strong interstate tourism numbers have helped show off the Tasmanian industry.
“We also believe the new direct flights with Newcastle will have an impact into the future, as well as flights to New Zealand,” she said.

Battery Point Distillery head distiller Luke Lawrence said Tasmanian whisky has a number of unique qualities that set it apart.
“We’re blessed with the best climate to make Singapore whisky and also gin here in Tassie.”
“I think what we’re doing here is a world-class product, and it’s very special to be involved with that,” Lawrence said.
Lark said the industry’s success is extending beyond whisky, with local producers diversifying their offerings.

“Although Tasmania is really well known for its whisky, we also have some fantastic gins. We’ve got rum, we’ve got liqueurs, we’ve got vodka vodka, we’ve got people utilising some of the native botanicals here,” Lark said.
With Christmas approaching, the TWSA is encouraging Tasmanians and visitors to support local distilleries.
“What could be a better Christmas gift for someone special than a bottle of Tasmanian whisky or spirits,” Lark said.
Lawrence believes the passion of local distillers adds to the appeal of their products.

“The people behind the product …I think that’s one of the major factors. The passion that we do bring to the table is world-class,” he said.
