TasPorts has extended the appointment of Captain Allan Gray as chief executive officer after the board decided he was the strongest candidate following a full recruitment process.

TasPorts chair Greg McCann said the board was pleased to keep a leader of Gray’s calibre through to December 2027.

“Captain Gray was initially appointed to provide leadership continuity while the board undertook a comprehensive and competitive recruitment process for the permanent CEO role,” he said.

“Following completion of that process, and based on Captain Gray’s performance leading the organisation, the Board determined that retaining him provides the strongest outcome and is in the best interests of TasPorts.”

Gray brings more than four decades of maritime and port experience and has led TasPorts since March this year.

He most recently served as chief executive of Sentient Ports in Perth and was previously president and chief executive of the Halifax Port Authority in Canada.

He also spent more than 20 years working across various commercial vessels before moving into senior leadership roles at Fremantle Ports.

Shareholder ministers approved the board’s recommendation to extend his tenure.

McCann said continuity of experienced leadership was critical as TasPorts continued delivering major projects and priorities that support Tasmania’s trade and economic growth.

The board plans to run another recruitment process before Gray’s extended appointment ends to ensure the next phase of leadership aligns with the organisation’s future direction.

“At present, the board’s focus is ensuring TasPorts continues to benefit from Captain Gray’s expertise and leadership during this important period,” McCann said.

Gray took over from former CEO Anthony Donald, who stepped down in March after nearly a decade with the organisation – including nearly eight years at its helm.
