A Tasmanian Aged Care Provider has been criticised as being ‘racist’ after it issued a memo to staff stating that they ‘must speak English’ while on the job and on company premises.
The memo, which has since been retracted, was labeled as “racist and bullying” by the Health and Community Services Union who argued it breached anti-discrimination laws.

Reportedly issued in response to complaints from residents and their families who felt intimidated by staff speaking in languages they did not understand, Southern Cross Care executives say they were not aware of the memo and have since apologised to staff.
