Tasmania’s book lovers are gearing up for a bargain-hunting bonanza as the Variety Monster Bookfair returns this weekend with more than 30 pallets of quality second-hand books.
The popular event, taking place Saturday and Sunday for the start of school holidays, will feature thousands of pre-loved books, games, puzzles and DVDs, with all proceeds supporting vulnerable Tasmanian children.
Variety Tasmania’s CEO, Mohammad Aldergham, said this year’s event is bigger than ever.
“This year’s fair truly is a Monster. We sorted through over 30 pallets of quality second-hand books,” he said.

“There’s plenty of free activities for families to enjoy including the Sorell School Animal Nursery, balloon art and Antarctic activities.”
The event will also feature the annual Spin4Kids spinathon on Saturday, with nearly 20 teams participating in a five-hour cycling challenge from 9am to 3pm.

Riders will attempt to clock up as many kilometres as possible, encouraged by spin instructors, high-energy music and mini challenges throughout the day.
Shiploads are supporting the event, with Director Ashley Wilson expecting it to be a “fantastic weekend packed full of school holiday fun for the kids and lovers of books of any age”.
“This year’s it’s going to be even bigger with 30 pallets donated this year through Shiploads stores!” he said.
“We love to be involved in the Bookfair each year knowing funds raised help give Tassie kids the same opportunities in life, regardless of ability or background,” he added.

Visitors to the bookfair can enjoy refreshments from a coffee van and sausage sizzle, plus free Valhalla Ice Cream while browsing for bargains.
Entry to the event is free, with activities either free or available for a gold coin donation.
The event runs from 9am to 4pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm Sunday.
