Tasmanian Taylor Swift fans were fooled by a strong rumour mill this morning, which suggested the American pop star was set to touch down in Tasmania for a brief island getaway.

Driven by several unscheduled private jet flights arriving at Tasmanian airports from Melbourne, small groups of ‘Swifties’ had gathered at both Hobart and Launceston airports by 11am, eagerly anticipating the rumoured visit from their idol.

However, it later turned out that some of the flights were emergency trips carrying medical professionals to undertake urgent surgeries.

Local and interstate news crews gathered at both airports awaiting Taylor’s arrival, only to be informed that she was en-route from Melbourne to Sydney instead.

A spokesperson for Tourism Tasmania said the singer would be ‘more than welcome’ on the island during her time in Australia.

“While we are not aware of any plans for Taylor to visit, Tasmania would be the perfect place for her to come for some time out while on her Australian tour,” they said.

Taylor Swift was previously rumoured to have visited Tasmania during her 2018 Australian tour, with insiders suggesting she may have explored destinations like Saffire Freycinet and Bruny Island.

Swift wrapped up her three-show Melbourne leg of her Australian tour on Sunday night and is now due to perform in Sydney for four nights from Friday.
