Teen charged with attempted carjacking after threatening Hobart mother

An 18-year-old man has been charged with attempted carjacking after allegedly threatening a mother and her two young children with a screwdriver in Hobart on Friday evening.

Police say the man was riding a stolen motorbike when he crashed through a red light at the intersection of Argyle and Macquarie Streets at about 6:35pm.

Shortly after the crash, the teenager allegedly attempted to steal a moving vehicle on Campbell Street. The car was occupied by a woman and her children, aged nine and 11.

“The offender, armed with a screwdriver, threatened the occupants in an attempt to take the vehicle,” police said.

Members of the public helped police safely arrest the man at the scene.

The teenager has been charged with multiple offences including attempted aggravated carjacking, common assault and motor vehicle stealing. He was remanded in custody and will appear in court today.

Investigators are now seeking witnesses and any available footage from the incidents.

They are particularly interested in CCTV or dashcam vision from the Argyle and Macquarie Streets area around 6:35pm, as well as Campbell Street shortly afterwards.
