A teenage driver has been disqualified from driving for the next three months after he was caught speeding past police at 39km/h above the posted speed limit.

The 18-year-old was travelling above the limit along the 70km/h West Tamar Highway at Riverside on Wednesday when he was caught.

As a result, he received a fine of $828.75, lost 6 demerit points and faces the prospect of further licence suspension due to being a provisional driver with only 4 demerit points remaining.

Inspector Darren Hopkins said 6 other drivers were also detected speeding during the 90-minute operation, including 1 who was using their mobile phone, one without a seatbelt and one unlicensed driver.

“Speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, using a mobile phone, and driving while fatigued put all road users at risk,” he said.

“Tasmania Police will continue to conduct high visibility enforcement activities aimed at improving driver behaviour and to help make our roads safer.”
