Teen P-plater caught speeding at 144km/h just four days after getting licence

A 17-year-old P-plate driver has been hit with hefty penalties after being caught travelling 44km/h over the speed limit on the Midland Highway near Oatlands.

Police intercepted the teenage driver about 4.30pm on Thursday, detecting him travelling at 144km/h while his provisional licence restricts him to 100km/h.

The young driver, who had held his licence for just four days, was also found breaching several other P1 licence conditions.

Senior Constable Shane Leek from Oatlands Police said the teenager was allegedly using a mobile phone while driving, had failed to display a rear P plate and was breaching peer passenger restrictions.

“This behaviour posed a serious risk to the driver, their passengers and other road users,” said Senior Constable Leek.

“Excessive speed, combined with inexperience and distraction, can have tragic consequences.”

The P-plater now faces a $1537 fine and 11 demerit points. He has also been disqualified from driving for three months.
