A teenage boy has died after the work vehicle he was driving hit a tree on a rural road in Tasmania’s far north-west this afternoon.

The 17-year-old was heading north on Roger River Road, south of Smithton, when he crashed around 12:15pm on Friday.

Police said his vehicle veered onto the wrong side of the road, continued along the verge for a short distance and then collided with a tree.

He was driving the flat-tray Ford Ranger as part of his job, police said.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones,” police said.

“A report will be prepared for the coroner.”

Crash investigators are asking anyone with dashcam footage or information to come forward.

It is the second road death reported today, as Tasmania’s road toll continues to rise and is now on track to surpass last year’s total.
