A teenage driver has been caught speeding at 147km/h on a Hobart highway, breaching multiple licence conditions in what police have described as “reckless” behaviour.
The P1 licence holder was pulled over by a police motorcyclist on the Tasman Highway at Cambridge shortly after midday on Wednesday.
Police said the teen’s black SUV was travelling 47km/h above the maximum provisional speed limit of 100km/h.
He was also 37km/h over the posted speed limit of 110km/h and had failed to display a rear P-plate.
“This type of reckless driving not only puts this inexperienced driver at serious risk, but also endangers other Tasmanian road users,” Acting Inspector Penny Reardon said.

“Excessive speed combined with inexperience can have tragic consequences and change people’s lives in an instant.”
The driver, who was heading towards the city, now faces a $1,305 fine, eight demerit points and a three-month licence disqualification.
Tasmania Police reminded P1 licence holders they must display P-plates front and rear, maintain a zero blood alcohol level and refrain from using mobile phones while driving.
Provisional drivers are also limited to one passenger aged between 16 and 21 and must not exceed 100km/h, regardless of the posted speed limit.
