Sandy Bay butcher Marcus Vermey is on track to become Tasmania’s newest MP, having been projected to claim a seat in Clark in Saturday’s state election.
The well-known local business owner leads the Liberal vote in the Hobart-based electorate.
While the final count is still underway, Vermey said he is feeling confident.
“Some say third time lucky and this may be true, but nothing beats hitting the streets and listening to the community,” he said.

“There are still many votes yet to be counted but it is looking very promising that I will be representing you in parliament in the seat of Clark.”
Vermey, who owns Vermey’s Quality Meats, had earlier contested the Legislative Council seat of Nelson this year, but lost to independent Meg Webb.

He also made an unsuccessful tilt at Clark in the 2024 state election.
“A huge thank you to all the voters that have voted for me and the Liberal team,” Vermey said.
“It is a humbling experience and an honour to know I have your support.”
He gave special thanks to his wife Rachel, saying she was often up before him “sometimes at 3am” to help with campaign preparations.

“You all have given me strength and confidence to take up this challenge,” he said.
“There is a lot to do and I know it will have many challenges but it is great to have such support.”
Vermey is currently one of two newcomers to be elected to parliament, alongside independent Peter George in the seat of Franklin.
