Updated 7:45pm, Sunday: Three people including a six-year-old child have been rescued after a boating incident near Robbins Island in Tasmania’s north-west.

A search is continuing for a fourth person, a 33-year-old man, who remains missing.

The vessel left the Montagu campground boat ramp at 5:30pm on Saturday with four people on board – three adults and a child – for a fishing trip.

It is understood all four were thrown into the water about 9pm on Saturday when the boat capsized. Police earlier said the vessel “broke up”.

Concerned relatives raised the alarm with police just after 8am on Sunday when the group failed to return to their campground at Montagu.

A search and rescue operation including a rescue helicopter, police and private vessels was deployed to the Robbins Island area.

Just after 1pm on Sunday, three people – a 27-year-old woman, a 36-year-old man and a 6-year-old child – were found on the shore of Robbins Island.

“The three people rescued were all wearing life jackets,” police said.

They were assessed at the North West Regional Hospital but are uninjured, despite their ordeal, police said.

The search for the missing 33-year-old man will continue this evening and resume early on Monday morning.
