Three sharks have been spotted at Friendly Beaches on Tasmania’s east coast, prompting a warning from police.

Tasmania Police issued a community alert on Thursday afternoon after the sharks were seen at the southern end of the beach near the campgrounds.

The species of the sharks is unknown.

The sighting comes just days after separate warnings for Coles Bay and Bruny Island over the new year period.

Friendly Beaches sits adjacent to several shark refuge areas, including Coles Bay and Great Oyster Bay, which are designated breeding habitat for school and gummy sharks.

These protected zones prohibit the targeting or taking of sharks, skates and rays to support breeding populations.

Police are urging beachgoers to exercise caution when entering the water and to report any sightings.
