The charges stem from an alleged incident at a home in Franklin on Saturday.

Magistrate Andrew McKee refused Burgess’s application for bail and remanded him in custody until his next court appearance on Friday.

Burgess is a three-time Olympian and represented Australia in rowing, including being the captain of the men’s rowing team in Athens 2004.

The small town of Geeveston, where Burgess is from, has a wooden statue of him on the main street.
