A public meeting at Hobart’s Town Hall to discuss the controversial proposed Collins Street bike will be moved to a bigger venue.

It comes after the Hobart City Council confirmed tickets to the free event are “temporarily exhausted” after reaching the capacity limit of Hobart Town Hall.

“We will have more tickets available when we lock in a venue with greater capacity on Monday,” council said.

Edwin Johnston, Chair of the Confederation of Greater Hobart Business, said the interest in the public meeting “is proof that this issue yet to be resolved.”

“We are happy for debate but the cycling lobby are actively advocating for the meeting to be stacked.

He says the current proposal is “not practical” and the council needs to go back to the drawing board.

“Solutions are needed that don’t involve the loss of accessible bus stops and loading zones, this is before we even talk about parking.”

“Collins Street is about to be reduced to 30km/h speed limit so the inner CBD section (between Barrack and Murray) should be a shared zone.”

A new report by Midson Traffic identified multiple concerns about the project’s impact on traffic flow, parking and overall road safety.

Council Transport Committee Chair Ryan Posselt said the bike lanes would be installed as a two-year trial to create a “safer, more vibrant space for people walking, cycling and driving”.

He says public consultation will continue throughout the trial and adjustments will be made as needed.
