Top Tasmanian horse trainer Scott Brunton has had his licence revoked by the Office of Racing Integrity.

ORI say the decision will come into effect on September 8, giving Brunton time to make arrangements for the 100 horses at his Seven Mile Beach stables.

The cancellation was based on an assessment of Brunton’s suitability to remain licensed following the liquidation of his company after a Federal Court decision.

Brunton’s company, Brunton Racing Pty Ltd, was wound up due to a $1 million tax debt to the Australian Tax Office.

Independent Member for Clark, Kristie Johnston MP, said the Office of Racing Integrity had “finally done its job”.

“Months ago I alerted the racing minister to the fact that Scott Brunton was allowed to train horses when he was clearly in financial difficulty and therefore not a fit and proper person to hold a licence,” Johnston said.

“Although the Office of Racing Integrity knew of the financial problems at Brunton’s stables over a year ago, it has taken to now for it to act.”

“Alternative arrangements will need to be found for the 100 horses at Brunton’s Seven Mile Beach stables, and I do have concerns for their welfare.”

The future of the horses remains uncertain, however it is believed Brunton’s partner or father-in-law may form a new company and take over operations.
