Huon Valley in Tasmania’s south has been recognised as one of the ‘best places to visit’ in 2024, according to a top travel magazine.

Condé Nast Traveller analysed locations across Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific to compile their widely shared and highly-viewed list, with the Huon Valley being one of just 10 locations to make the cut.

“Most visitors who venture to Tasmania – the island down under the land down under – start their trips in the quirky capital of Hobart, with its eccentric Museum of Old and New Art, and then make a beeline up the east coast to Freycinet National Park or out west to Cradle Mountain,” the magazine reads.

“But zigzagging across the island at breakneck speed would be missing the point entirely. For a true understanding of what makes this area so special, make your way to the Huon Valley, just 45 minutes south of Hobart.”

“Here, amid the off-the-beaten-path winemakers and idyllic apple orchards that lend Tasmania its nickname the Apple Isle, a host of new luxury hideaways are making a compelling case for slowing down to Tassie time: Hunter Huon Valley opened in July 2023 with three striking cabins hidden away in the wilderness; close on its heels was the Clifton Homestead, a charming B&B by the team behind the area’s celebrated new restaurant The Kiln, with four rooms and two cottages set alongside the Mountain River.”

“New for 2024, a still-to-be-named art-filled luxury villa, by the same folks who founded the lush hideaway Island House on Lord Howe Island.”

“But the news that’s sure to put the region on the global culinary map comes courtesy of Kiwi superstar chef Analiese Gregory, who traversed the globe working at the world’s most prestigious kitchens (Le Meurice in Paris; Quay in Sydney) before the Huon Valley’s vibrant produce lured her into making it her adopted home.”

“Come early 2024, she’ll debut a tiny 10-seat restaurant focused on celebrating the ingredients that drew her to the valley.”

Tourism Tasmania CEO Sarah Clark said the Huon Valley makes a unique contribution to Tasmania’s tourism offering.

“The things that make Tasmania a special place to live are the very same things that make our state so attractive to visitors; our people, products and natural experiences, and the Huon Valley region is a great example of this,” she said.

“With boutique award winning food, ciders and wine to walks in World Heritage Areas, underground dolomite caves, pools fed by mineral-rich thermal springs and the iconic Tahune Airwalk, we’re not surprised that the Huon Valley has made the list of best places to travel in 2024.”
