A notorious intersection on a busy Hobart highway will receive traffic lights in the coming months, ending a 14-year campaign for safety improvements at the crash-prone junction.
Preparation works at the intersection of the Brooker Highway with Foreshore Road and Duncan Street will begin on Monday.
Crews will set up traffic management, relocate underground services and establish the site before major construction gets underway later this month.
State Growth says the upgrade is due for completion in April 2026.
The project aims to fix long-running safety issues, where drivers currently have to cross two lanes of oncoming traffic to reach Montrose Bay High School, the foreshore recreation area and local community clubs.

Independent Elwick MLC Bec Thomas, who has been pushing for the upgrade since a 2011 transport plan marked the site as a high priority, says the announcement is a big win.
“I’ve been a long-time advocate for an upgrade of this dangerous intersection,” she said.
The Department of State Growth says multiple crashes sparked repeated safety reviews, with particular concern for school students and pedestrians navigating the four-lane highway.
The area is especially busy during school drop-off and pick-up and also serves as a gateway to Montrose Bay Foreshore Park, which links to MyState Bank Arena via shared footpaths.
Upgrades will include new traffic lights synced with other Brooker Highway intersections, dedicated turning lanes and improved pedestrian crossings.

The Foreshore Road car park will also be sealed.
Construction will be staged to limit disruption, with highway works running overnight between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday.
Daytime works will take place on Duncan Street, Foreshore Road and Riverway Road, with traffic conditions restored by 6:30am each morning to avoid peak-hour delays.
