Transport giant acquires Derwent Valley bus company

Australian transport giant Kinetic has announced the acquisition of O’Driscoll Coaches, operators of Hobart’s Derwent Valley Link service.

The acquisition includes 10 government contracted services, including school bus and general access routes, with 33 buses and 42 employees all offered continued employment with Kinetic.

Also the operators of Hobart’s SkyBus airport service, Kinetic have a network of 252 buses and 272 employees across the state.

The Derwent Valley Link is the latest acquisition to join the Kinetic network, alongside Redline Coaches, MerseyLink, Saintys and East Tamar bus lines.

In a statement, Kinetic say plans are currently underway to modernize its bus fleet and improve driver facilities with a planned $10 million upgrade in Tasmania over the next 18 months.

“The works include an overhaul of Kinetic’s Hobart depot, upgrade of the transit centre in Hobart and relocation of the transit centre in Launceston and introduction of new vehicle livery and uniforms reflecting Kinetic’s brand.”

Kinetic Co-CEO, Michael Sewards, said O’Driscoll founders Peter and Erica have built a business focused on service and the local community, and they look forward to continuing their legacy.

“Buses will play an essential role in Tasmania’s public transport network and tourism industry now and into the future and as key economic precincts continue to grow, the demand for reliable, safe, clean and green bus services will only increase.”

Peter O’Driscoll, the former owner of O’Driscoll Coaches, expressed confidence in Kinetic’s commitment to local communities and the positive outcomes it will deliver for employees, customers, and the local community.

“Over the years in the bus industry we’ve built many wonderful relationships with our employees and life-long friendships.”

The acquisition is expected to be completed in February.
