A truck driver has pleaded guilty to serious driving charges after a crash that claimed the lives of an elderly couple on a Hobart bridge last year.
Antonios Maounis Van Eldik, 53, entered pleas of guilty to two counts of causing death by negligent driving in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Thursday.
The charges stem from a crash on September 27, 2024, on the Bowen Bridge.
Police allege Van Eldik was driving a Hino truck when he lost control, causing it to collide with a Holden Barina carrying a couple, both in their 80s.

The couple were passengers in the small car and died at the scene.
The Barina’s driver suffered minor injuries. The vehicle then struck two other cars on the bridge, but the occupants of those vehicles were not seriously injured.

Van Eldik’s lawyer entered the guilty pleas and asked for the case to be listed for a facts and sentencing hearing.
The magistrate adjourned the matter and granted Van Eldik bail.
The crash happened just after 3:30pm on the first day of the school holidays, shutting both lanes of the bridge for several hours.
